Locals threaten hunger strike if Mapusa drain not fixed

MAPUSA

Concerned residents of Mapusa under the banner of ‘Swabhimani Mapxekars’ have threatened to go on hunger strike if the government fails to fix the overflowing drain on the main road in Khorlim, Mapusa within 48 hours.

For more than a month, filthy water from a choked drain has been overflowing onto the Khorlim bypass road causing a major nuisance to locals and motorists.

The water accumulates in the middle of the road thereby hampering the movement of vehicles and inconveniencing the pedestrians.

Further, the accumulated filthy water emanates foul smell and has become a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes.

In a letter to the Bardez deputy collector, Dilip Natekar of Swabhimani Mapxekars said that the chief officer, chairperson and councilors of the Mapusa Municipal Council were aware of the overflowing drain but failed to clear it by stating that the drain/nullah belongs to the water resources department.

“While MMC passes on the buck, the taxpaying people of Mapusa have to suffer as a result of overflowing water on the road and the consequent development of potholes,” Natekar said.

He said the pedestrians are made to suffer as they have to move around in ankle-dip water and also get splashed with dirty water from moving vehicles.

He further said that the public was made to face the nuisance due to negligence on the part of the authorities.

“As administrative head of Mapusa, we expect you to do the needful to clear the public nuisance by repairing and clearing the drain within 48 hours failing which I, along with concerned citizens of Mapusa will go on hunger strike at Hutatma Chowk,” Natekar said in his letter to the deputy collector.
