Maharashtra tourist drowns in Agonda

CANACONA

A trip ended in tragedy within hours of arriving at Agonda beach when a tourist from Bhusaval-Maharashtra drowned in the sea on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Canacona PSI Ramchandra Naik, the deceased, Vivek Murai, and a friend had arrived in the State on Sunday and were staying in a hotel at Anjuna.

The two friends then proceeded to Agonda on Tuesday morning and checked in at a beachside resort. Sometime around 12.30 pm and 1 pm, they went for a swim in front of their resort, when Murai began drifting into the sea.

The friend raised an alarm and Dristhi lifesavers rushed on jetski scooters towards Murai and brought him ashore. As he did not respond to first aid, a 108 ambulance was pressed into service.

The 108 ambulance, however, developed a snag and another 108 ambulance took Murai to the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors on duty declared the victim dead on arrival.

Canacona police said the body has been sent to the mortuary at Margao and further investigations are in progress.
