Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has called for stricter legislation to penalise those who hurt religious sentiments, suggesting that offenders should be denied bail and face imprisonment for up to a month.
Speaking on Monday, Lobo also urged Goans, particularly the youth, to use social media responsibly and avoid misusing it for negative purposes.
"There is a need to bring legislation or an amendment in the assembly against those who hurt religious sentiments. He or she should be sent to jail for 15 days to one month. This will send a signal that no one should hurt religious sentiments," Lobo stated.
The call for tougher laws follows recent incidents involving social media misuse. Self-styled activist Shreha Dhargalkar recently made disparaging remarks about the dhonds participating in the Devi Lairai zatra in Shirgao, sparking controversy. Additionally, a minor girl commented against the traditional practice of running on burning coals at the Shirgao zatra, provoking a strong response from devotees.
Lobo criticised individuals who misuse social media to gain instant fame through controversial statements. "There are some people, NGOs, and individuals who misuse the platform. They should not use social media inappropriately, especially not against religion. Such posts attract comments that add fuel to the fire," he said.
Lobo emphasised the positive potential of social media, advocating its use for public good such as spreading information or raising awareness about important issues. "People should highlight accident-prone areas, potholes on roads, or instances of traffic police harassment," he suggested.
He also expressed concern about people from other states living in Goa and attempting to create divisions between Catholics and Hindus. "This should stop. We need to stand united. People, especially the youth, should refrain from using social media in harmful ways," Lobo urged.
Lobo warned that misuse of social media could send a negative message across India and the world, indicating that it is being used for the wrong reasons. He reiterated the importance of responsible social media usage to maintain communal harmony and uphold the State's reputation.
