Newly elected City Ward Councillor Shami Salkar had on Wednesday written to the Mormugao Municipal Council ( MMC) Chief to take up the pre-monsoon works.
Salkar in her letter wrote regarding the problems which are likely to be faced if pre-monsoon works are not taken up immediately in the Port town.
Salkar speaking to media said that age-old trees along the Swatantra Path need to be trimmed, pruned urgently before the monsoon sets in.
"It has been seen in the past that these trees have outlived their life and are prone to falling with the slightest gusts of wind. I have also reminded that last year there was a tragedy wherein an innocent scooterist lost his life and that the same should not get repeated at any cost. I have drawn the attention of the Chief Officer stating that the monsoon is round the corner and that the pre-monsoon works like desilting of gutters, cross drains in the city have not yet begun. If these works are not done on time, it would lead to chaos because of flooding," said Salkar.
Salkar also requested the Chief Officer that these works should be taken up on priority basis so that there is no inconvenience caused to the public.
"Major tragedies in the city have been averted in the past because of the timely initiative of former councillor Daji Salkar who had then wtitten to the Dy Collector heading the Disaster Management Committee regarding these trees and made sure that all the dangerous trees were cut and trimmed wherever necessary after the Dy Collector declared them dangerous on the recommendation of the Forest Department. I request the Chief Officer to take up these two works on priority basis so that the public would not have to face any hardships in the coming days," added Salkar.
