Mormugao council to get CCTVs, hydrants at garbage dump site

VASCO

Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues has said fire hydrants, fire hoses and CCTVs will be placed at the MMC garbage dumping site in Sada.

The garbage dump at Sada has been facing continuous fire incidents, inviting a lot of criticism from all sections of the people. Many have raised questions on the rising fire incidents at the MMC garbage dumping site in Sada.

When an area near the garbage dumping site caught fire on Wednesday evening, there were speculations of foul play in the fire incident.

The Vasco Fire Officer Incharge Dilip Bicholkar on Wednesday said the Garbage dump fires were a long pending issue and they had requested the MMC to put up hydrants and water hose systems at the site.

"We had recommended to the MMC in 2013 that the MMC place hydrants and hose reels at the site but there has been no compliance from the MMC side till date. This is very important and safety precautions measure for the garbage plant during emergency situations.”

“Sometimes, we get two calls at the same time and we even had this experience when we got a call that the garbage dump was on fire and another call that a house was on fire, leaving us to wonder who to give priority first," said Bicholkar.

MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues has said fire hydrants, fire hoses and CCTVs would be placed at the garbage dumping site soon.

"We have had the request to set up hydrants and hose reels at the garbage dumping site but considering the financial pressure we are facing, we have requested the Goa Shipyard Limited to help us in this under CSR. We are also wondering that there could some foul play involved in the regular fire incidents at the site and hence, we have also proposed to have around 20 CCTVs installed at the location. We have placed the proposal with the GSL who will place the proposal for this year's budget and the MMC will get the works done in a few months" said Rodrigues.
