CANACONA

A team of forest officers on Thursday visited the government owned Carpentry Common Facility cum Production Centre in Idhar-Loliem to inspect the wooden logs lying dumped at the carpentry unit.

There had been allegations that trees were illegally felled and the logs were being processed at the government-owned carpentry unit. The forest department was also accused of failing to take action on the logs still lying dumped at the carpentry unit.

According to sources, a forest department team visit the carpentry unit to carry out an inspection.

The team was seen taking account of the logs lying in the compound of the carpentry unit, when some media persons arrived at the site.

On seeing the media persons and others, the forest officers reportedly stopped their work, retreated from the area and left in the forest jeep.

Efforts by media persons to ascertain the reason for the inspection to be left incomplete midway were met with silence from officers concerned, who merely stated that they had received a call from the higher-up to report for other important matter.

Locals alleged the forest team may have gone to the site due to some pressure and abruptly left midway on noticing media persons at the carpentry centre.
