The Revolutionary Goans (RG) led by its leader Ajay Kholkar conducted an awareness drive among the locals on the demonstration housing project for urban homeless, which is approved in Provedoria property in Chimbel.

The drive, which commenced on Friday, continued on Sunday as well and RG has plans to complete the entire drive by Saturday so that the issue reaches every household of Chimbelkars before the gram sabha, which will be held on April 17.

Speaking exclusively to The Goan, Kholkar informed that they are undertaking the awareness drive so that the people come to know of the project and how it will affect the village.

“We are informing the villagers that the project is equivalent to setting up of a modern slum, which will lead to destruction of whatever is left of Chimbel. Already we have one slum in the form of Indira Nagar and we don’t want another slum in the village,” Kholkar said.

On the response received from the public, Kholkar said, “The villagers are surprised that such a project is planned in this part of the village, which has relatively maintained its rural identity.”

Further, Kholkar and his team are distributing pamphlets among the villagers highlighting the pros and cons of the issue. “We are also asking the villagers to come out in large numbers for the April 17 gram sabha and extend support in opposing the project,” another RG member Avinash Shirvoikar informed.
