Sesa's 1,500 mining workers put on notice

PANAJI

Over 1,500 workers of Sesa Mining Corporation have been issued retrenchment notices after the company applied for permission with the Union labour ministry for a nod to retrench them from October 5 this year citing uncertainty of leases and operations in Goa.

The notices served to the workers has cited the State government's fiat to the company to vacate leases and remove all plants, machinery, equipment and workforce before June 7.

Meanwhile, Puti Gaokar of United Mines Workers Union has demanded that government should either auction the leases or start mining through the State Mining Corporation within a month to prevent workers from being retrenched.
