Goa police have chosen teachers as ambassadors to spread cybercrime awareness among students, as it aims to curb rising online fraud and identity theft.
The department has also advised victims of financial cyber crimes to immediately report the frauds on the national cyber crime helpline 1930 to ensure that accounts are blocked and minimum damage is done,
"In the cyber world, anonymity is most significant. It is a complex pattern ridden with problems and challenges. So we chose teachers who will be ambassadors to spread the message among students and they'll, in turn, communicate with their parents and eventually, it will reach the society," Director General of Police Jaspal Singh said.
The State police held a training session on cybercrime awareness at SCERT Porvorim on Thursday as the Cyber Crime Cell is celebrating Cyber Jagrookta Divas.
All computer teachers of government schools are being trained as Cyber Shikshaks, who shall further spread awareness among the students.
DGP discussed emerging trends in cyber crimes and advised people to report about cybercrimes on the national cyber crime reporting portal https://www.cybercrime.gov.in/ or 1930.
He also spoke about challenges with the maximum use of the internet for payments and social media.
“With 5G leading to making the Internet of Things(IoT) which connects different types of gadgets, more popular, cybercrimes will increase further. Anonymity and absence of geographical boundaries make it difficult to trace the culprit. Therefore, awareness is the key to keeping people away from falling prey to cybercrime,” he said adding that cybercrime cannot be prevented physically.
Identity thefts with cases of cyber criminals trying to cheat people by impersonating Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and some government officers have come to the fore in the recent past. The morphing of pictures and financial fraud have also seen a rise. DGP has warned people against falling prey to gullible tricks by criminals.
