Vasco civic body gets new CO, asks taxpayers to clear dues or face action

VASCO
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Angelo Fernandes has been given additional charge as chief officer of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and his message to residents in the port town were crisp and clear: Clear pending dues or face action.

Fernandes had served as MMC chief officer in the past and had been widely appreciated for his work and his style of functioning in the council.

He has now appealed to taxpayers to clear the pending dues to the MMC on or before January 31, 2021, or face action.

“I have also passed on this message through media campaign and also have plans to use a vehicle with a sound system moving across all 25 wards to create awareness on the issue,” said Fernandes.

Fernandes said he has already taken up the drive for recovery because the MMC staff are not getting their salaries on time.

“Retired employees have also not got their dues for over a year and to recover the arrears, I appeal to people to come and pay their dues,” said Fernandes.

“MMC must collect these dues from trade tax, rent, signboard fees in a time-bound manner with the liberty to defaulters to come forward and affect payment on or before January 31, 2021, to avoid any deterrent or punitive action from the MMC," said Fernandes.

"Defaulters are called upon to either conduct self-assessment of the dues payable to MMC at the rate specified under Section 108 of Municipal Act or approach the taxation section for computation of the dues and affect the payment of balance amount.”

“Failure on their part of payment before January 31 shall be deemed to be their wilful default of dues and MMC reserves the right to take all legal actions including cancellation and suspension of lease or trade licenses or advertising boards.”

“The MMC can also initiate the process for cancellation of lease agreements as well as sealing of the premises if there is a default in the payment of dues which are not cleared to the MMC by January 31," said Fernandes.
