Admitting that Goa has been suffering every year on account of breaching of the Tillari Canal in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the best option to solve the issue would be to get water directly from Tillari Dam by laying pipelines from the dam to Goa’s border, instead of getting it from the open canal.
"As the water of Tilari Dam is constantly irregular, the State government now plans to get water directly from Tillari Dam by laying an underground water pipeline from Tillari Dam to the Goa border, instead of depending on the open canal which breaches every year in Maharashtra. This way, we can ensure regular and uninterrupted water supply to Goa,” Sawant told reporters.
Sawant recalled that former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had similar plans and had also discussed the issue.
“The Tillai Canal was built to provide regular and uninterrupted water supply for drinking and irrigation needs in the State. However, the canal has been breaching regularly and the time has come to work out alternate solutions,” said Sawant.
The chief minister also said the State government is working to make Goa fully self-sufficient in water through the pumping station at Sal river and other places, as raw water is abundant in the state.
