With machinery engaged in clearing Sonsodo legacy dump, MMC hopes to resolve waste woes plaguing Margao in New Year

MARGAO
With heavy earth moving machinery engaged by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) on the job to clear the Sonsodo legacy dump, the Margao Municipal Council hopes to effectively handle the Sonsodo tangle, if not resolve the waste management crisis in the New Year.

Days of work on the Sonsodo legacy dump has brought good news for the GWMC and the MMC that they have cleared the dry and plastic waste from the dump near the abandoned Komex plant, which is just metres away from the existing waste treatment plant.

GWMC Managing Director Levinson Martins informed that clearing the part of the legacy dump near the old Komex plant has now ensured that the civic body can use the area for future requirements.

“The GWMC had taken up the work of first clearing the area near the abandoned Komex shed so that the area is made available to the MMC to take up future projects,” Martins said, adding that the MMC can straight away go for construction in and around the abandoned Komex shed.

He said the GWMC had focused its attention on the area near the abandoned Komex shed area and have been successful in clearing the legacy dump and making available the land to the MMC to erect a structure.

In the meantime, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has exuded confidence that the civic body will bring about a turnaround in the waste handling in the commercial capital in the New Year. “We have already e-tendered the bio-methanation plants. The last date of submission of bids is January 5. After the bids are opened on January 5, the MMC will expedite the process so that the two plants take shape at the earliest,” he said, adding that the two bio-methanation plants will come up at the SGPDA market and at Sonsodo.

The MMC Chief Officer further said a slew of measures to tackle the garbage problem in the city will be implemented in the city at the earliest. As already reported, the MMC is thinking of setting up bio-gas plants in the housing societies, which are the bulk waste generators.

He further said that the civic body is on the job to streamline the handling of the dry and plastic waste in the city to ensure that the waste is baled on time and transported to the cement factories in neighbouring Karnataka.
