MARGAO
Littering along the major road side in the state seemd to have not stopped and the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has made a fervent plea to all the municipal councils and the village panchayats across Goa to ensure 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection in its jurisdiction.
Saying that door-to-door waste collection will help in dissuading people from throwing waste on the roadsides, the GWMC has urged officials of the local bodies to invoke the provisions of The Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act 1996 as amended and fine violators as per the provision of the Act.
The GWMC appointed contractor has found as many as seven roads in Salcete littered with waste.
The roads include Power house circle, Aquem to Ramnagirir, Sao Jose de Areal, Floriano Vaz Circle to Ramnagiri junction via Housing Board, Rainbow valley Mugalli to Davorlim Chapel, Bolshe Circle, Margao to Sonsodo, Rawanfond Junction to St Joseph Chapel, Areal, St Sebastian Chapel, Chinchinim to Betul, Margao K TC to Verna via new western bypass.
GWMC Managing Director, Levinson Martins said the Corporation has been undertaking cleaning of littered waste from National Highways and other major roads in the State of Goa through its appointed contractor KCIC Pvt Ltd since 2020.
“Now, GWMC has observed that apart from the major roads few other roads have also become heavily littered and many black spots/dumps have been formed along these roads due to indiscriminate dumping”, he said.
Taking cognizance of the same, GWMC has undertaken one-time cleaning of these littered stretches since November 9 through its highway cleaning contractor.
The GWMC has made a fervent plea to the general public to stop dumping of waste on the roads and prevent re-emergence of these black spots in future and instead to handover the waste to respective panchayat’s waste collector.
