Amid a rise in inter-state thefts in various areas in and around Belagavi region, Belagavi Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang has stated that several stringent measures are being initiated to strengthen policing specifically in areas where thefts were registered.

In a recent incident, a group of people had tied a thief to a tree and had thrashed him after catching him at Hindalga, while several cases of thefts were recorded in Belagavi rural areas as well.

The Police Commissioner said the police officials had arrested all the accused in the house-theft cases registered in Modaga Honnihal, Hudali and Khangaon, all in Marihal Police Station limits. He said in connection with these theft cases, the police recovered Rs 7.80 lakh stolen cash and two two-wheelers from the accused.

He also ascertained that he had been stepping up the police-beat operations to maintain a vigil all across the city limits on the suspected people.

Asked why the police department did not have CCTV cameras in all areas to prevent thefts and burglaries, the commissioner said at least 280 CCTV cameras were installed in city limits and the Smart City Project officials were in charge of their maintenance.

When asked about allegations by traders who have urged police authorities to stop unnecessary harassment of Goan vehicles entering Belagavi, Police Commissioner Martin said that he has received some complaints in this regard and would look into them.
