The scheduled demolition of an old and structurally unsafe commercial building owned by the Honda Panchayat was unexpectedly postponed on Sunday, creating surprise among local residents.
Although the North Goa District Collector had issued orders for the immediate demolition of the building and all necessary preparations had been completed by the Block Development Office, Honda Panchayat, and other agencies, the operation was called off after the PWD Building Division expressed its inability to undertake the demolition due to a shortage of machinery and manpower.
According to available information, the three-storeyed commercial building was constructed by the Honda Panchayat approximately 32 years ago.
Due to years of inadequate maintenance, the structure had deteriorated significantly and was declared unsafe for public use. Technical inspections reportedly revealed major cracks in the walls, weakened staircases, damaged roofing, and other structural defects, posing a serious threat to public safety.
Based on the technical assessment report, the Honda Panchayat completed all required administrative formalities and submitted a proposal to the North Goa District Administration seeking permission for demolition.
After reviewing the matter, the District Collector granted approval and issued orders for the structure to be demolished. Accordingly, all departments concerned were informed, and demolition work was scheduled to commence on Sunday morning.
As part of the preparations, authorities had made arrangements for public safety and traffic management in the area. Plans were also in place regarding electricity supply, water supply, police deployment, and other logistical requirements. Officials from various departments had been instructed to remain present at the site during the operation.
To ensure compliance with the District Collector’s order, several government officials had already assembled at the site on Sunday morning. Those present included Sattari Mamlatdar Dhirendra Banawalikar, Block Development Officer Manohar Parwar, Honda Panchayat Sarpanch Shivdas Madkar, and Panchayat Secretary Mula Varak.
However, shortly before the scheduled action, the PWD Building Division informed the Panchayat in writing that it was unable to carry out the demolition. The department reportedly stated that it lacked the heavy machinery, technical equipment, and trained manpower required to safely demolish a structure of such magnitude.
As a result, the planned operation had to be postponed.
Meanwhile, concerns continue to grow as the building remains in a dangerous condition, prompting demands for immediate precautionary measures to protect the public.
Residents pointed out that the building is located in the heart of the Honda market area, which witnesses heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement throughout the day.
Given the ongoing monsoon season, there are fears that portions of the structure could collapse at any time. Citizens have therefore urged the authorities to make alternative arrangements without delay and complete the demolition process at the earliest.
