In a significant move, the Mapusa Municipal Council has decided to install seven surveillance cameras in Mapusa Municipal Market.

Paramount Engineering Pvt Ltd has bagged the tender to install the CCTV cameras for a total cost of Rs 5 lakh.

While the CCTV cameras will be monitored by the Mapusa Police, a monitor will also be set up at the Council Chairperson’s cabin.

One each camera will be installed at the main market entrance to the market, one opposite the Bata showroom housed in Sirsat building and one at the market entrance from KTC side. Remaining four cameras will be installed at strategic points inside the main market.

Decision to increase wards flayed:

Condemning government’s decision to increase the number of wards in Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), the Mapusa People’s Union has urged the government to either roll back the decision or face protest.

“The government has committed a fraud on the people of Mapusa by increasing the number of wards, even when the latest census figures show that the population of the town has decreased,” said Adv Gautam Pednekar, president of Mapusa People’s Union.

Criticizing the government’s surreptitious way of introducing a notification to increase the number of wards in the state, Pednekar said the notification was against people’s wish and the spirit of the Constitution.

“The government issued the notification without taking the councillors or the public into confidence,” he said and urged the government to withdraw the notification immediately.

The increase in the number of wards will not help MMC to get the 'A' status, he said. “On the contrary, it will put additional burden on the public ex-chequer,” he added.

He said the Mapusa People’s Union will go door to door and meet people to make them aware of the fraud committed by the government on the people of Mapusa.

“We will also write to all the political parties including BJP, Congress, MGP, AAP and NGOs about the government’s hidden agenda to increase the number of wards in Mapusa,” Pednekar said.

He further said Mapusa MLA Francis D’Souza was trying to bring his own people including his son into politics through the civic elections.

“One of the reasons to increase the municipal wards was to create a ward for the son of the Mapusa MLA,” he alleged.
