A 51-year-old Mapusa-based fish vendor who was a Person with Disability (PwD) was killed after he was knocked down by a Goa-registered SUV driven by a tourist, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, at Porvorim in the wee hours of Tuesday.
According to Porvorim police, the mishap took place at about 4.30 am as the fish vendor Kittu Kashinath Behra was proceeding on his special three-wheeler from Mapusa towards Malim to purchase fish.
When he reached near the Delfino’s Mart along the highway, he was struck from behind by a speeding SUV, which then rammed into an electricity pole and bending it by the side of the road.
Behra sustained serious injuries and police later moved him to the GMC hospital at Bambolim, where he was declared dead on admission.
Porvorim police later arrested the SUV driver Naresh Kantilal Jain (41) from Vashi near Mumbai under Sections 279 and 304 of IPC.
Porvorim police said the blood report of the accused driver, Naresh Jain, showed alcohol contents in his blood, indicating that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the mishap.
Police said Jain and his colleagues from Maharashtra were in vehicle when he lost control and rammed into the rear of the special three-wheel vehicle driven by Behra.
Police have initiated action against the SUV owner who had given the vehicle to tourists on hire and Police Sub Inspector Vaman Naik is investigating the case.
