1 held for Rs 2.45 cr stock market scam

The Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police on Monday arrested a man from Maharashtra for allegedly cheating a Goa resident of Rs 2.45 crore by promising high returns on stock market investments.

In a statement, the police said the accused, Sanjay M Chavan (45), was arrested on July 6.

“The accused posed as a stockbroker and convinced a resident of Salcete to join a WhatsApp group and invest Rs 2.45 crore over a period of time, promising high returns. Our investigation into the money trail led us to Chavan, and we found that Rs 13.5 lakh was deposited in his account,” the police said.

A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. Police said the investigation is ongoing to check if others are involved in the scam.
