OLD GOA
A youth from Carambolim was killed while three others were injured as a chemical containing tanker collided against six other vehicles at the Chimbel junction, on Thursday morning.
While Akshay Karmalkar (24) lost his life while undergoing treatment in the GMC, Alpak Shah, Shashikala Haldankar and Prasanna Gaonkar were the three injured in the accident and are currently undergoing treatment in the GMC.
The driver of the tanker has been arrested by the Old Goa police.
According to eye witnesses, the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle due to break failure on the slope and first hit a Baleno car which, in turn, hit the scooter ridden by Karmalkar.
The tanker then went on to hit a rickshaw, a Honda car, another scooter and a water tanker before coming to a
halt. The rider of the second scooter had a lucky escape as he was flung off the scooter on impact and the scooter was dragged for several metres by the tanker.
The Honda car was completely mangled as it got caught between the chemical tanker and the water tanker.
A local, Pravin Chopdencar, informed that it was total chaos after the accident and locals came to the rescue of those trapped inside the Baleno and Honda cars.
“Four 108 ambulances rushed to the site of the accident and the seriously injured youth was the first to be shifted to the GMC. The other injured persons were later shifted in the other ambulances,” Chopdencar stated.
However, Akshay Karmalkar (24) lost his life while undergoing treatment in the GMC.
