MAPUSA: The Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has undertaken the work of installation of CCTV cameras on four major beaches in North Goa and eight beaches in South Goa under the central government’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme.
The installation of cameras in North Goa is nearly complete and may be put into operation very soon while it is in progress in South Goa.
High definition surveillance cameras have already been installed on four popular beaches of Calangute, Baga, Candolim and Anjuna in North Goa, while work of installing such cameras on Colva, Benaulim, Utorda, Majorda, Betalbatim, Palolem, Agonda and Gonsua beaches in South Goa was in progress.
The total cost of the project undertaken through the central funds has been pegged at around Rs 6 crore.
The high definition cameras have night vision IR optics with optical zooming power and can cover a distance of 5 kms.
“After commissioning, the entire system will be handed over to the police department for monitoring and necessary action,” a senior official at the GTDC informed.
“The objective behind the idea to install the cameras is to keep a watch on illegal activities, people and tourists visiting the beach, shacks etc,” the official added.
In Calangute, Baga, Candolim and Anjuna the cameras have been installed at the respective parking lot and the beach area.
In Calangute, the road leading to the beach and in Baga the entire Tito’s lane have also been covered with the surveillance cameras.
“In the first phase we decided to install CCTV cameras along beaches which are popular and frequently visited by tourists. Work on the remaining beaches will be taken up in the second phase,” said Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar, Tourism Minister.
He said the control room to monitor the CCTV footage will be set up at various tourist information centres established near the beach areas.
Elated about the project, Calangute PI, Jivba Dalvi said surveillance cameras will be a boon for investigation of cases.
“We will also be able to keep track if any untoward incident happens along the beach-belt,” Dalvi said.
