While it is a common practice to worship clay Ganesh idols during Chaturthi, 13 families of a clan in Poinguinim follow an unusual tradition of celebrating Chaturthi. The Prabhugaonkar clan worship Lord Ganesh's idol in a paper image.
According to sources, Patri (different types of medicinal leaves) collected from the nearby forest are bundled (pudi) as Gauri and Coconuts (as Madhav), which are placed before the paper image of Ganesh.
The same Patri-Ganapati is worshipped as Madhav-Ganapati-Gauri.
This unique celebration is held every year by the Prabhugaongkar clan during Ganesh Chaturthi at Welwada-Poinguinim.
Members from Prabhugaonkar's 13 families venture into the forest a previous day before the Ganesh Chaturthi and collect different types of wild leaves (mostly medicinal) and flowers, locally called Patri.
Tulsi, Bel, Visnukant (Indigofera dalzellii), kamal, kevda and bringara are some of the leaves that are picked up from the nearby forests as Patri.
The Pudi or bundle of medicinal leaves are wrapped in Kasal leaves and placed before the Ganpati image.
This year, the Prabhugaonkar clan celebrated Ganesh for one-and-half days and the Ganapati immersion ceremony was also conducted in a unique practice.
The immersion puja is conducted near a well, and as part of the immersion ritual, the image of Ganapati is released into the well waters, while Madhav (Coconut) and Gauri (Patri) are placed under a coconut tree, thus completing the Ganapati Visarjan (immersion).
Elsewhere, several Ganapati idols were taken for immersion in Canacona taluka. While many were taken to the beaches, a number of Ganesh idols were immersed in rivers and others were immersed in ponds. 2-day Ganesh festivities ends in South Goa
MARGAO: Curtains came down on the two-day Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in Margao and surrounding areas with immersion ceremonies taking place at water tallis and lakes with religious fervour.
Ganesh idols from Margao, Fatorda and surrounding areas were taken to the Damodar Linga, Fatorda for immersion.
This year, Ganesh idol immersion resumed at the Benaulim lake after the water body was de-weeded and beautified ahead of the festival.
Benaulim AAP MLA Venzy Viegas pointed out that after many years Banaulikars were able to do “visarjan” of Ganesh idols at Voddlem Tollem, Benaulim. “As per my promise, the pond and the surroundings were cleaned and provided safe access and other facilities to ensure a clean and safe visarjan,” he said.
In fact, the immersion site was richly decorated with lights as many households preferred to immerse Ganesh idol’s at the Voddlem Tollem after a long time.
