162 students accorded scholarships

Dr Erwin Desa, professor in Physics Department at Goa University, has advised students to inculcate the habit of reading and writing, which is very important in academics and which would help them in their future studies.

He was addressing a gathering at the Syngenta Santa Monica Scholarship Awards for the year 2014-15 at Syngenta Santa Monica, Corlim recently.

The Syngenta Scholarship was started in 2012 for students from Corlim, Carambolim, Cumbharjua, Tivrem, Orgao, Old Goa and Bhoma panchayat areas. These one-time awards are given to students who excel in academics, sports and arts. Dwarakanath R S, site manager at Syngenta, presided over the function.

A total of 162 students were selected for the scholarship award this year. In the general category, the top three students in XII Arts, Commerce & Science from the specified panchayat areas were given the scholarships, besides the best four in sports and one in arts. The top four students in SSC were also given the scholarship.

In the school specific scholarship, top three students in Std VIII, IX & X from 7 secondary schools were awarded scholarship. Students who excelled in sports and arts in the respective schools were also awarded.

The scholarship for primary school was also announced and 6 students each from 10 schools from the surrounding villages will get the scholarship award in this category.

Dwarakanath mentioned that more than 500 students have been awarded scholarships so far.

“Syngenta believes that this kind of support will motivate students to excel in academics as well as sports and arts,” he said.
