Calangute police on Thursday arrested two men under preventive provisions after they were allegedly found clicking photographs of tourists without consent and harassing visitors at Baga beach. This is the latest case along Goa’s busiest tourist belt.

The accused have been identified as P Arantha (43) and Vijay T (38), both residents of Tamil Nadu. Police said they were booked under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNNS), 2023.

The arrests came just a day after Calangute police booked two other persons for allegedly sexually harassing a foreign woman in full public view on Calangute beach.

That incident once again raised questions about the lack of effective preventive policing in the area.

Police action after complaints is quick but mostly reactive. Tourists, especially women, continue to face harassment at beaches like Calangute and Baga.

Many cases go unreported. The lack of regular patrols, surprise checks and strict enforcement sends a worrying signal.
