Kharewado bay, the only safe shelter on the Goa coast, on Friday, saw around 200 trawlers from Gujarat take refuge from rough weather at the location.
Speaking to the media, Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association (GFBOA) President and Former Minister Jose Philip D’Souza said that Kharewado bay was the only shelter available on Goa coast and hence the trawlers from Gujarat which were in the sea and could not brave the rough weather, storm and strong currents chose to take shelter in the bay.
D’Souza said that shelter was not available at Betul and Panaji jetties, leaving Kharewado as the only location along the Goan coast.
D’Souza also said that despite being the only safe shelter, the Kharewado jetty was in extremely dilapidated state and the fishermen community for the last 50 years had been demanding upgradation or an extension by few metres so as to accommodate more trawlers in Goa or extend help to other interstate trawlers arriving in the safe shelter of the bay.
D’Souza hoped that the new Fisheries Minister Filipe Neri and CM Dr Pramod Sawant would help in upgrading the jetty.
