PANAJI: In yet another shocking incident, a 20-year-old female student of the BITS Pilani Goa campus at Sancoale has allegedly died by suicide on campus, police said.

This is the sixth student death reported at the institute in a little over a year.

The deceased has been identified as Vaishnavi, a third-year Electronics and Communication Engineering student from Bengaluru. According to police sources, the student allegedly ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan using a bedsheet, late Saturday night.

Verna police said they received information about the incident following a late-night call from Arjun Halankar, Public Relations Officer of BITS Pilani, reporting the suspected suicide.

A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an inquiry has been initiated. Police said the exact circumstances that led the student to take the extreme step are not yet known, and further investigation is underway.

The incident adds to a disturbing series of student deaths reported at the BITS Pilani Goa campus since December 2024, when the first such case was reported.

In December 2024, Om Priyan Singh, a second-year BE Computer Science and MSc Chemistry student, died by suicide. This was followed by the death of Atharv Desai, a third-year dual-degree student, in March 2025.

In May, Krishna Kasera, a second-year dual-degree student (MSc Chemistry and BE Electrical & Instrumentation), was found dead, with his family later raising suspicions of foul play and demanding a thorough probe.

In August, Kushagra Jain, a third-year Economics and Computer Science student, was found dead in his hostel room. While the case was initially registered as an unnatural death, toxicology reports later indicated the presence of medication in his system, prompting further investigation.

On September 4, Rishi Nair (20), a second-year MSc Physics student who had transferred from the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus, was found dead in his hostel room, marking the fifth death in nine months.
