Police nabbed a 23-year-old Manjunath Dodamani, a Class X dropout, for allegedly raping and murdering a 24-year-old girl at Old Goa.

Dodamani was on Sunday remanded to police custody for ten days.

The teams formed under the supervision of North Goa SP Chandan Choudhary, SP crime Kartik Kashyap, Sub-divisional police officer Panaji and Mapusa and a team led by the DySP Crime tasted success and nabbed the accused, informed Deputy Inspector General Paramaditya at a press conference.

The girl’s body was found at a helipad in an isolated location at Dhauji on October 9.

Initially police had registered a case of unnatural death but after the post-mortem examination report it was revealed that she was sexually assaulted and murdered by compressing her mouth and neck.

The police teams first checked all CCTV footages and after obtaining a lead arrested Dodamani from his residence.

Dodamani has confessed to having committed the crime, police said.

Dodamani’s parents who hail from Belgaum have lived in Goa for the last 35 years. He used to assist his father in the earth-moving machinery business. The family also runs a kiosk selling soft drinks and snacks at Dhauji.

Dodamani was known to the victim and gave her a lift on the pretext of dropping her home. Instead he took her to an isolated spot which is near her house and strangulated her.

Police officials Sunil Redkar, Sarvesh Gawas, Nitin Gaonkar, Goravally Gurraya and Rajat Shetye have been recommended for a reward for their role in the investigation, DIG Paramaditya said.
