25-year-old brain dead labourer saves five lives through organ donation in Goa

PANAJI: A 25-year-old man from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, who was deemed brain dead following an accident has given a new lease of life to five people. The man was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Mapusa. 

The donor’s kidneys were transplanted to two women, aged 35 and 36, at Goa Medical College (GMC). His heart was allocated to a 55-year-old man at H N Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, while his liver was transplanted into a 39-year-old man at Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad.

 Since no suitable recipient for the lungs was found in the region, they were allocated through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) to Apollo Hospital in Delhi.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced the provision of financial support to the family towards the education of the deceased children. 

Recognizing the sacrifice of the donor’s wife, Jagruti, Rane said that his personal trust would support the education of the couple’s children. 

“Your life gets shattered when the breadearner of the family is gone. Yet, Jagruti came forward to give a lease of life to so many others. I will ensure that her children’s education is fully taken care of,” Rane said.

The donor, a labourer at a construction site in Bicholim, suffered severe brain injuries in the accident Despite receiving medical care, he was declared brain dead.  

 GMC Dean Dr. Shivanand Bandekar also assured the family that the donor’s mortal remains would be transported to their native village in Jabalpur.

The transportation of the organs was made possible through three green corridors facilitated by SOTTO Goa, the Goa Police Traffic Cell, EMRI 108, and airport authorities. The heart and liver were transported from GMC to Manohar International Airport (Mopa), while the lungs were transported to Dabolim International Airport.
