CANACONA
In a tragic incident on Sunday at the construction site of a bhandara in Ambeval-Talem, Gaondongrim, one worker died, and another was injured when they were buried in a heap of earth. Rajesh Ghatwal, aged 29 and a native of West Bengal, died instantly, while his cousin Vishal Ghatwal sustained injuries.
They were constructing a retaining wall for the bhandara, part of an ongoing project by the Water Resources Department. The incident occurred around 3.45 pm during centring work beneath the retaining wall, triggering a mini-landslide. Rajesh was fully buried, and Vishal up to his shoulder. Despite efforts by co-workers using a JCB and manual excavation, Rajesh was pronounced dead at the Community Health Centre in Canacona, while Vishal received initial treatment before being transferred to SGDH Margao.
Probe into the incident is underway. Rajesh’s body is currently at the SGDH morgue awaiting further procedures.
