Barely a day after supplies to Goa were streamlined as the Belagavi wholesale vegetable market had returned to normalcy, supplies to Goa will now be stopped for the next three days as the Belagavi district administration has imposed a total lockdown from Saturday.
With Belagavi reporting a huge spike in the Covid cases since the last week, the district administration has imposed a 48-hour total lockdown from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Monday.
Except for milk, medicines and health needs, everything including selling of vegetables and other essential commodities like groceries, etc. has been banned. Movement of all types of vehicles, except for very essential commodities, have been banned, stated authorities in a notice.
Following the order, the Belegavi Wholesale Vegetable Merchants Association has issued a circular requesting farmers not to bring any vegetables to Belagavi market for next 3 days.
“As the district administration has banned vegetable trading from Saturday to Monday morning and since Monday is the weekly off, we urge farmers and traders not to carry out any supply and trading activity for the next three days,” the association has urged traders and farmers in a circular that was issued on Friday.
Meanwhile, Belagavi has been experiencing a huge spike in Covid positive cases since last week. As on Friday, Belagavi district had 16,716 active cases, while 415 persons have died of Covid since April last year. Belagavi city and taluka is the worst affected area, followed by Khanapur taluka.
The district APMC authorities have also sent a circular to farmers and vegetable suppliers to stop trading activities during the total lockdown on Saturday and Sunday.
