The State’s capital on Monday recorded a maximum temperature of 37.9 degree Celsius which was 5.5 degree Celsius higher than normal temperature making it one of the hottest days in the month.
The highest maximum temperature ever recorded in Panaji was 39.8 degree Celsius on April 7, 1989, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
“Monday’s temperature was third highest for the month of February and if taking all the months it’s the tenth highest daily maximum temperature recorded at Panaji,” the IMD senior scientist Rahul Mohan said.
“From 1969 to 2023 there have been eight days in February when the maximum temperature at Panaji was 37 degrees Celsius or higher,” he added.
According to IMD, with strengthening of easterly winds in the lower atmosphere over Goa, a rise in maximum temperature by around two degrees Celsius was expected over both the districts of the State on February 13 and 16 and a likely fall by one-to-two-degree Celsius February 14 and 15.
“Maximum temperature is likely to continue to be higher than normal. A fall in maximum temperature by around two degrees Celsius is likely on February 14 and a rise of around two degrees Celsius is likely again on February 16 and 17,” Mohan said.
