4 held for IPL betting racket in Candolim flat

Four persons were arrested in North Goa for allegedly running an illegal betting operation on an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, police said.

According to the complaint, betting activities were being carried out from a flat in a residential complex at Candolim on the night of April 28, between 10.30 pm and 11.55 pm.

Acting on specific information that bets were being placed on the IPL T20 match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals using mobile phones, laptops and an iPad, police obtained a search warrant from the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Porvorim, and conducted a raid at the premises.

During the raid, four accused were allegedly caught red-handed while accepting bets on the ongoing match.

The accused have been identified as Sohail Rauma (27), Bhaveshkumar Raval (31), Amirkhan Pathan (28) and Kalpesh Mali (24), all natives of Gujarat.

Police said they seized eight mobile phones, one Apple iPad and two laptops, collectively valued at around Rs 5 lakh, from the spot.

A case has been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act.
