A couple from Sansarwada-Harvalem, a native of West Bengal and a 27-year-old man of Verla Canca but a native of Jharkhand were killed while several others were injured in the several road mishaps reported in the State on Wednesday.
In the first accident, a couple was killed on the spot while their one-year-old son injured after a scooter came under the rear wheels of a tipper truck at Supachi Pud in Harvalem-Sanquelim on Wednesday morning.
According to Bicholim police, the deceased scooter rider, Kishore Naik (30) of Sansarwada-Harvalem was heading towards Valpoi on his scooter along with his wife Archana (23) and their toddler.
He was following a tipper truck which was also proceeding in the same direction. As they reached near Supachi Pud in Harvalem, the scooter accidentally struck the rear wheel of the truck, leading them to fall down. The couple were killed on the spot, while 1-year-old son sustained minor injuries.
Bicholim police have arrested truck driver Prakash Dattaram Mulgaonkar (61) from Pale-Velguem and are investigating the case.
In the second accident, a container truck crashed through roadside kiosks at Manaswada in Kundaim on Wednesday, injuring nearly half a dozen persons of whom one succumbed to serious injuries the same evening.
The driver allegedly failed to control the speeding heavy vehicle that went straight on and crashed into the shops. Among the injured, 32-year-old Sukesh Basak, a native of West Bengal succumbed to injuries during the treatment at the government hospital. The driver was also injured in the accident.
The accident led to traffic jam along the route until a crane was called to tow the vehicle to the police station. One of the temporary shops was completely demolished.
The police are investigating the case to ascertain if the accident was due to brake failure or reckless and negligent driving. The Transport officials will on Thursday inspect the vehicle.
In another accident, a 27-year-old man died while his three-year-old daughter and three others were injured in a road mishap that occurred late Tuesday night along the Mapusa-Parra road near the Bodgeshwar Temple, Mapusa Police informed.
The deceased, Mohammad Chaman (28) of Verla Canca but a native of Jharkhand, who was riding a scooter died on the spot in a head-on collision between a bike and the scooter. His minor daughter and another 13-year-old boy were injured and shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
The rider and pillion-rider of the other motorcycle were also injured and shifted to the GMC.
Mapusa Police informed that the deceased was moving from Canca to Mapusa while the rider of the other two-wheeler Umar Khan was coming in the opposite direction when both collided near the Bodgeshwar Temple at around 11.30 pm.
A case has been registered against the motorcycle rider Umar Khan under Sections 279, 337, 338 and 304-A of the IPC.
Police conducted the panchanama and shifted the body of the deceased for post mortem to Bambolim. Mapusa Police is investigating further.
Meanwhile, two persons were injured when their vehicle crashed into a street light pole on the Atal Setu bridge on Wednesday night.
Fortunately, no lives were lost but the self-accident damaged the vehicle and the government property.
The accident occurred around 9:30 pm and the fire personnel were called in to rescue the injured who were trapped inside. They were immediately shifted to the GMC for treatment. The Panaji police are investigating the cause of the accident. More details were awaited till late night.
