As part of efforts to boost sports activities, Sports Minister Govind Gaude on Tuesday said residential coaching academies would be set up for table tennis, badminton and swimming from June 15 across four locations in the State, which would accommodate as many as 3,000 students.
Gaude was speaking to reporters after inspecting the ground and the dilapidated indoor sports complex at Bhute Bhat in the presence of Vasco MLA Krishna (Daji) Salkar, Councillors Girish Borkar, Amey Chopdekar and other residents.
"Coaching is very important and we need good coaches. Good coaching cannot take place when people arrive for coaching and go back home again. We have decided to set up a residential coaching academy for TT, badminton and swimming at Campal.”
“We will have similar sports excellence centres in North, South, East and West of Goa, where we will accommodate around 3,000 students who have been selected from various parts of Goa and help them shine in the field of sports,” said Gaude.
Gaude said works will be taken up to improve the Bhute Bhat ground, while the dilapidated indoor complex will be renovated.
"The roof of the complex is broken and water has damaged the floor. We have now decided to cover the roof with new sheets and renovate the complex in two phases. We will first stop the leakages and simultaneously, have a good gymnasium and TT tables in the complex. This complex at Bhute Bhat will be one of the best within a year," said Gaude.
Vasco MLA Krishna (Daji) Salkar said the Bhute Bhat ground was in a dilapidated state.
"The ground has a lot of issues and the indoor sports complex is dilapidated because since the last ten years, it was used for almost everything ranging from Covid, mahila mandal meetings and other events, except sports.”
“The sports minister has now assured not only to renovate the sports complex but also give us additional gym and table tennis tables," said Salkar.
