According to the Customs, the Bhatkal native was travelling from Goa to Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight. The accused had concealed the foreign currency in the baggage.
The Customs checked the baggage on suspicion and found the currency. The officials said during the interrogation the accused failed to produce any legal document to prove that he was in possession of such a large sum of foreign currency. A case has been registered against him.
The Customs informed that this is the second case within a span of 10 days. In July, officials had seized foreign currency amounting to
Rs 16 lakh from a person, also from Bhatkal. When asked whether both the accused were arrested, the Customs official said an arrest is made only if the currency is over Rs 20 lakh in Indian currency.
