Officers from the Directorate of Mines & Geology (DMG) on Tuesday seized five canoes after raiding an illegal extraction site near the Amona-Khandola bridge.

All five canoes were filled with sand and mining department officers were awaiting the arrival of officials from the Captain of Ports (CoP) to hand over these canoes to them, but they did not turn up and police were kept to keep an eye on these canoes.

According to reports, Assistant Geologist Gloria Fernandes, Technical Assistant Suraj Kalangutkar and Shyam Sawant conducted the raid on Tuesday at about 10 am.

Some migrant labourers were found extracting sand from the Mandovi river and someone had been unloading the sand at the riverbank.

When the workers saw the officers at the site, they jumped into the river and fled by swimming to the other side.

As news of the raid spread, some locals engaged in sand extraction gathered at Amona-Khandola bridge but none of them went to meet the raiding party.

Media persons sought information about the raid, but the DMG officers declined to divulge details.
