Over ten months after the recruitment process for 182 Marathi-medium primary teachers’ posts commenced with the advertisement issued by Directorate of Education (DoE), a list of 158 selected candidates was finally announced on Tuesday.
The list announced by the DoE shows 67 candidates selected in the general category, even though 91 posts had initially been advertised. The reason for only 67 candidates being selected is still unclear.
In the reserved categories, candidates in the OBC, SC and ST categories were announced in keeping with the posts advertised. 45 candidates were announced from the OBC category, 43 from the ST category, and three from the SC category.
Due to a Supreme Court order (Civil Appeal No 3609 of 2017) which states that “candidates selected on their own merits (are) not to be adjusted against reserved quota,” as many as 30 plus candidates from the reserved category have been pushed into the general category, an official from the DoE who did not wish to be identified told The Goan. This means that the total number of general category candidates who actually made the final list was a little over 30.
Newly appointed Director of Education Vandana Rao IAS did not wish to talk to The Goan about the recruitment and announcement of selected candidates.
The wait for the recruitment of the 182 Marathi-medium primary school teachers had been a never-ending one, with the recruitment process prolonging for months, and being delayed because of the code of conduct which was in force earlier this year.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had given an assurance on the floor of the House, that the recruitment orders for these posts would be passed within the week following the conclusion of the
Assembly session.
