Most women trafficked to Goa are from Maharashtra, reveals report

Ninety-two of the 299 victims of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE), trafficked to Goa from within India between July 2014 and July 2019 were from Maharashtra while 66 victims of CSE in this period were from West Bengal and 31 of them were from Delhi. 

These are the girl and women victims of CSE rescued by the Goa police, whose cases were then registered with the district magistrates for inquiry under Section 17 of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act 1956. 

Anyay Rahit Zindagi (ARZ), an organization committed to combating trafficking of persons for CSE in Goa has compiled these statistics in a book released on Tuesday.   

The statistics have also revealed that 21 victims of CSE (7.1%) were from Goa itself. Other rescued victims trafficked from India were found to belong to 20 other states in the country.   

Meanwhile, 55 victims rescued in Goa in the same time period were trafficked from outside India. Of these, 23 (41.8 %) were from Bangladesh, 14 (or 25.5%) were from Nepal, and 9 (or 16.4%) were from Uzbekistan. Four victims were also trafficked from Thailand, two from Kyrgyzstan, and one each from Russia, Turkmenistan and Turkey.   

According to the compiled information, 400 girls and women were rescued in this five year period, but only 353 accepted that they were victims of CSE, while the others denied that they were involved in CSE. 66% of the victims were rescued from urban areas in Goa, and 34% of them were rescued from rural areas.
