Facing all round flak for police brutality on a youth from Betul on Sunday, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Parmaditya on Wednesday placed all the five policemen, including a police sub-inspector (PSI) under suspension. The five were allegedly involved in the assault of the youngster.

The policemen placed under suspension are PSI Mahesh S Velip, police constables Upendra U Upaskar, Sandeep K Konkre, Gitesh G Gaonkar and Police constable/driver Chandru K Gaonkar.

In an order issued on Wednesday, the DIG directed the five policemen to deposit their kit articles and appointment certificates with the officer-in-charge and report to the in-charge, District Police Reserve Lines, Margao immediately.

During the period of suspension, the five policemen have been directed to report to the district police reserve lines, South, Margao, with a further direction not to leave the headquarters without obtaining prior permission of the DIG. Disciplinary proceedings against the five policemen have been initiated by the DIG as evident by the contents in the order.

The suspension has come hours after Sub-divisional Police Officer, Margao DySP Raju Raut Desai submitted his report to the District Police Chief, SP Arvind Gawas in the wee hours of Wednesday. The office of the SP is believed to have later forwarded the report to the DIG’s office.

Sources in the know told The Goan that though the inquiry officer did not recommend any action, the nature of injuries on the body of the victim was enough to conclude that the victim was mercilessly beaten up by the men in uniform.

Incidentally, DIG Paramaditya had personally visited the Cuncolim police station on Tuesday noon to get a first-hand report of the incident and had an interaction with both the victim and the erring policemen.
