Amid the Transport Department’s directives to crack down on illegal operations by rental car and bike operators, Goa police reported that 5,010 cases have been registered for various traffic violations involving rental vehicles so far this year.
Official data released to the media on Saturday indicates that 3,629 rent-a-bikes were prosecuted while 1,381 were against rent-a-cars.
In 2024, a total of 22,764 prosecutions were registered against rental vehicles with rent-a-bikes recording the highest -- 14,718 cases while 8,046 cases were recorded against rent-a-car services.
Admitting to complaints and violations of existing rules, the Transport Department ordered a strict crackdown on all illegal rental vehicle operations last month.
On February 21, the department issued a public warning that violators caught offering rental cab services from public places such as airports and railway stations would face license suspension. Operators are also directed to conduct business strictly from their registered offices.
Further tightening regulations, the department on February 28 ordered that violators would be fined Rs 10,000 and have their vehicle registrations suspended if private vehicles were given on rent. Repeat offenders would face cancellation of their registration or permit.
