Tourism Minister, Manohar Babu Ajgaonkar informed that 62.3 lakh tourists visited the state in 2016-17, which was 13.7% more than 54.8 lakh tourists in 2015-16.

Ajgaonkar was responding to a question tabled by Quepem MLA Chandrakant Babu Kavalekar, during the ongoing monsoon session of the assembly.
Of 62.3 lakh tourists in 2016-17, 55 lakh were domestic tourists and 7.3 lakh were foreign tourists. The number of foreign tourists in 2016-17 grew by a significant 22.4%, while the count of domestic tourists grew by 12.6%.
Overall number of tourists in Goa grew by an appreciable 22% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) from 28.2 lakhs in 2012-13 to 62.3 lakhs in 2016-17. The CAGR in the arrival number of domestic tourists stood at 23.5% between 2012-13 and 2016-17. In the same time-frame, foreign tourists' number grew by a CAGR of 12.5%. Ajgaonkar was even asked about the method deployed by the state government to arrive at the number of tourists visiting the state.
He replied, "The data is collected manually from hoteliers, charter-flights, airport, cruise ships, Kadamba Transport Corporation and railway authorities for each month. After compiling the same, data is generated."
