About 54 families residing in seven A-type government quarters at Altinho and Bhatlem in Panaji have been asked to immediately vacate their premises, after the structures were declared unsafe for occupation.
The affected families have been left in the lurch as they have been asked to make their own alternate arrangements. But many families have expressed helplessness in shifting elsewhere and have instead, requested the
government to provide them with alternate
arrangements.
According to reports, the PWD (buildings) division submitted a report stating that the seven A-type government quarters at Altinho and Bhatlem are in dilapidated condition and are unsafe for inhabitation.
The PWD Building division had conducted an NDT test of the buildings through the S P Bagve consultancy and seven A-type government building were found to be unsafe in a report on July 17, 2018.
The PWD then sent its report to the General Administration on April 15.
Immediately, acting on the PWD report, Under Secretary of General Administration Shripad Arlekar issued notices to all affected residents, asking them to vacate their premises immediately and to make their own alternate arrangements for accommodation.
The notice cautions the residents that the PWD would be not held responsible in case of any untoward eventuality.
The occupants of one A-type building, which has been considered the weakest, have already vacated the premises and have shifted elsewhere.
The families residing in the other six A-type government quarters now have the task of searching out for alternate accommodation.
“These buildings were in a dilapidated condition for several years and authorities had been regularly assuring to construct new buildings. However, the process to construct new buildings never started.
If there are any government quarters available elsewhere, we should be accommodated there,” said one affected resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
