DGP Indra Dev Shukla on Saturday said police had registered four cases regarding clashes with two groups at Bogda-Vasco on Friday and added that while nine have been arrested, as many as 50 persons could be arrested in the incident.
Speaking to media persons in Vasco, DGP Shukla said there were Holi celebrations and the two groups had clashed on Friday.
“Pradeep Mayekar was passing with his vehicle while the other group was celebrating Holi and while Mayekar wanted to pass from there, the other group claimed that his vehicle had touched someone,” said DGP Shukla.
“I feel these guys celebrating Holi should have given him way when he was moving on the road, and this clash would have not happened. But the other group used it as an alibi, attacked him and damaged his vehicle, besides abusing him.”
“When Mayekar was going home, this same group went towards his house and began fighting with the police and started pelting stones on his house. Had the police not been around, the situation would have gone out of control.”
“This is high handedness and the height of goondaism. We will not tolerate this and the police will now investigate the case," said DGP Shukla.
The DGP said a video has surfaced after elections, where the leader of one group is saying some dangerous things and this has activated some goondas.
“To bring things under control, we have deputed a large police force and registered four cases in the incident, the punishment of which could be up to 10 years," said Shukla.
“So far, 9 persons have been arrested and 50 more people could face arrest. They must either surrender to the police station or find out if their names are in the list of the accused seen in the videos.”
“There is no point of hide and seek, and they must help in the investigation and the court will do its job. We can propose NSA and externment in this case and invoke all possible sections available in law and all illegal activities in Mormugao will now come to a full stop," he added.
When asked, DGP Shukla said the police has invoked sections of rioting, assault, threatening to kill and even criminal trespassing in the incident at Bogda.
“There are many offences involved in this clash because these people have stopped a car, carried out an assault and later pelted stones on the houses and damaged property,” said DGP Shukla.
Stop gambling in Vasco or face dismissal: DGP warns police
VASCO: DGP Indra Dev Shukla on Saturday said strict action would be initiated to stop all gambling activities and clubs in Vasco, even going to the extent of warning police officers of dismissal if they failed to curb gambling and betting activities in their jurisdiction.
"As far as Vasco is concerned, goondaism has been encouraged by drunkards, gamblers and club owners, and these people create problems.”
“I have given orders to the incharge of all police stations in Vasco division that they must report to me that there are no gambling and betting activities in their jurisdiction and that, no club is operating there.”
“They will have to send a wireless in this connection to the police control room daily before 7 pm or else, he will lose his job," warned DGP Shukla.
