The Cutbona fishing jetty reported moderate landing of the prized solar shrimp on Wednesday as the hunt for the prized shrimp is nearing end.
Sources informed that a purse seine vessel netted a bumper catch of the solar shrimp, with rough estimates putting the tonnage to over three. Small fishing vessels that had ventured in the sea for fishing also reported small catch.
In fact, the solar shrimp, which is normally available during the first fortnight of the new fishing season, has been caught in moderate quantities along Salcete coast this season. Before the mechanized fishing vessels could venture out in the sea, the motorized country made motorized canoes had netted the solar shrimp in moderate quantities.
A visit to the Benaulim beach on Tuesday saw local traditional fishermen selling the solar shrimp at the beach, besides other market points near the Maria hall and other places.
A wholesale fish agent informed that they have purchased moderate quantities of the prized solar shrimp this season. The agent, however, hastened to add that the purchase of the shrimp this season has been less compared in the past.
Meanwhile, sources pointed out that more than 50 per cent of the fishing vessels, operating from the Cutbona fishing jetty, have started the new fishing season.
Former Cutbona Boat Owners Union Cypriano Cardozo informed the migrant fishing crew members have made their presence felt at the Cutbona jetty, facilitating the fishing boats to start the new season. He, however, said a number of fishing boats are still lying anchored as the migrant crew is yet to report at the jetty.
