AAP flays statements on victims in Benaulim gang-rape case

PANAJI

The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday criticised the statement by CM Pramod Sawant in the Legislative Assembly in connection to the minor victims of the Benaulim gang-rape case.

In a press release, AAP leaders criticised the comments by the Chief Minister. The party also highlighted that none of the legislators sitting in the Assembly condemned these statements.

AAP questioned the silence of all members of the Legislative Assembly on this issue, the press note added.

This is just the latest in a long line of anti-women statements by the CMs across the States. Instead of condemning the gang-rape case, the CM said that girls should not be out late at night, AAP stated in the press release.

"The CM is supporting rapists by making these statements! As someone who has faced harassment myself I want to ask that if the CM himself makes such a statement are we safe in Goa?" said Cecille Rodriques.

"What does he mean by this statement? Who is responsible? Can he make such a statement?" questioned AAP leader Adv Sushma Gaude.

"Why is the government putting the barriers on Goan girls? Goans never discriminate between boys and girls, just because we are out at night doesn't mean that we are blamed when a crime is committed on us! Why is it that there is still victim-blaming happening?" asked AAP youth leader Durva Pednekar.

"I strongly condemn the statement made by Goa CM who holds the Home portfolio. If he is helpless he is unfit for the office," said AAP convenor Mhambre.
