AAP, Goans protest against poor handling of teenager’s death

PANAJI
Hundreds of Goans along with Aam Aadmi Party got together and protested against the poor handling of the death of the teenaged girl from Nachinola and the government’s failure to protect girls and women in the State of Goa.

In a press note, AAP said that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s statements and inaction on past cases seems to be emboldening criminal elements in Goa.

AAP convenor Rahul Mhambre addressing the crowd highlighted how lack of infrastructure like CCTVs impacted safety. AAP also demanded that a CBI enquiry be conducted in this case.

“Over the past month, Goa has unfortunately seen a number of cases of crimes against women which has shaken the State that is often considered safe for women. In the present case at the Calangute police station, the government has not made any statements empathising with the family nor shown any support for what they have been going through. Rather than ensuring that there was faith in the investigation statements were made attributing the case to be “a drowning” even though no complete investigation had taken place. It was only after a hue and cry took place that the police began looking at the victim’s phone,” AAP states in the press note.

“Shockingly it was found that none of the CCTV cameras in Calangute were operational. The same case can be found in Mapusa where the girl waited at a bus stop,” AAP stated further.

“First we saw the horror in Benaulim and now we are seeing this case in Calangute. The fact of the matter is that the government has abdicated its responsibility to protect Goans and women in Goa,” added Mhambre.

AAP flays free water promise

PANAJI: AAP leader Mahadev Naik has criticised government’s promise of free water for non-commercial domestic consumers from September 1.

In a press note, Naik said, “Chief Minister has made an announcement without thinking of the modality of how he will provide water to every house and how will he make this free. The fact is that Goa is still not tanker-free.”
