OLD GOA

Raising concern over illegal fishing by migrants in the Dongorim rivulet, which is a fish breeding area, AAP leader Ramrao Wagh has appealed to the local MLA and authorities concerned to take cognisance and stop such activity before it creates a law and order problem.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Wagh pointed out that since the past many days migrants from Karnataka equipped with small circular boats are descending at Dongorim and undertaking large scale fishing illegally in the rivulet.

“The rivulet is located between the Zambla bundh and the Ofla Dongzo bundh, and during the months of May-June, it acts as a fish breeding site,” Wagh informed and expressed concern that such large-scale fishing activity could lead to depletion in the fish production in the future.

“I have already alerted the Mamlatdar and the Talathi about the issue. Also, one-and-half months back, a concerned local had written to the St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar seeking action in the matter but nothing happened,” he stated.

“Yesterday, there was confrontation between locals and migrants over illegal fishing activity. The migrants, however, said they were brought by a local to undertake fishing. This issue needs to be resolved before it becomes a serious law and order situation,” Wagh added and appealed to the local MLA Borkar to look into the issue on an urgent basis.

When contacted, MLA Borkar said that he has already brought the issue to the notice of the Mamlatdar as well as the Talathi and asked them to look into the matter.

“I have also sought an appointment with the Mamlatdar to hold a joint meeting of members of all the tenants associations so that the issues faced by them are resolved,” Borkar said but added that he is yet to receive a favourable reply.

Ready to work with MLA

for agri revival: Wagh

OLD GOA: Even though St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar and AAP leader Ramrao Wagh are working towards the same cause for the revival of agriculture, they currently appear to be at opposing ends on the issue with both working at their own levels and not together.

When questioned by The Goan on the need to work together on the issue, Wagh said he is ready to extend cooperation with the MLA if he takes the lead and involves everybody.

“I am ready to work with anybody as far as revival of agriculture is concerned. Earlier too, I have worked with former MLA Francisco Silveira. I do not intend to involve politics on the issue. But I have not received any intimation on this front from the current MLA,” Wagh stated.

“Further, the MLA has to take the lead in this direction as he has resources at his disposal and can take up the issue with the ministers and the authorities concerned. Also, he has to take everybody along, including members of the tenants associations,” Wagh said.
