“Former CM Laxmikant Parsekar decided not to file the petition. We support the legal liquor industry and we are of the opinion that although it has been delayed, it is still not too late for the government to file the petition before the SC. The government needs to denotify the state and national highways and those major district roads which were upgraded as highways. Give immediate relief and then go for an ordinance,” Faleiro thundered.
Faleiro sought to remind that the SC had written to Union Ministry of Road Transports and highways directing the ministry to seek opinion from the states way back in 2007 when the primary petition was filed before the SC asking for such a ban. “It is because many states did not give any say that the SC gave its order,” Faleiro insisted.
The remarks came after a three-hour long meeting of the Congress Legislature Party at the Assembly complex where it was decided to back the liquor traders in their fight against the Supreme Court order banning sale of liquor within 500 mts of highways.

Leader of Opposition Kavalekar said that the CLP laos discussed the matter of formulating the disqualification petition against Vishwajit Rane, who quit the party and resigned as Valpoi MLA after defying the party whip on voting on the motion of confidence.
Responding to the entry of Vishwajit in BJP, Kavalekar said, “Vishwajit has already quit the party. His future plans do not affect the Congress any more. We are in discussion along with Senior Rane to identify candidate. There will be two by-polls and we are monitoring the developments for quick response. Disqualification petition has almost been formulated. We have consulted legal experts from all fronts.”
Liquor traders hail govt move to confront ban
PANAJI: Liquor traders affected by the Supreme Court’s decision to ban all liquor licences within 500 metres of the national and state highways held a mammoth meeting at Taleigao and decided to stand behind the government’s efforts to ensure minimal impact of the Supreme Court’s order on liquor licences.
The meeting held both with an aim to show unity was attended by around than 3,000 people aired their grievances, the situation they are facing as well as the need to find a resolution to the problem quickly.
Speaking after the meeting, President of the association of the all Goa Liquor Traders Association said that the meeting was held to apprise the affected bar and restaurant owners of the steps the association as well as the government was taking to secure them relief from the Supreme Court’s orders.
“We are fully behind the government in what it is trying. Over the next few days more than 1000 licence holders will get relief and later once the bypasses are ready and the state highways are notified even more licence holders will be relieved,” Naik said.
