Acting on complaints by residents, Vasco police on Tuesday began a drive against beggars in the port town.
The drive was carried out under the supervision of Vasco Police Inspector Nilesh Rane and as many as 11 beggars were picked from different parts of the city and produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class court.
When contacted, Vasco Police Sub-Inspector Amarnath Passi said residents had been complaining about the rising number of beggars, who were not only sitting at a place but were also moving around, touching people and forcing them for money.
“We have booked around 11 beggars from different locations in the city like the railway station and temples. They have been produced before the JMFC after registering a case under the 4 (1) of the Goa, Daman and Diu Prevention of Begging Act, 1972,” said PSI Passi.
