PANAJI
National award-winning RTI activist Rajan Ghate on November 16 started an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan, Panaji declaring that he would continue until the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar resigns.
“We did not fight for freedom from the Portuguese for the state to deteriorate like this,” said Ghate on Day 2 of his strike.
“How long my fast lasts depends on the government now,” he added.
Ghate also gave a call to the youth of Goa to support him, as well as political parties.
He expressed happiness that the Congress had shown him support with national Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala, Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, Tivim MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar and other Congress party workers going to the Maidan to meet him on Saturday.
Ghate’s strike comes in the light of the Chief Minister continuing in the post despite having pancreatic cancer for the last several months, and being in and out of hospitals in the US and India. The CM is currently at his private residence in Dona Paula since October 15, and has not been going to work at his office in the Secretariat, or addressed the press, despite a cabinet meeting being chaired by him at his residence on October 31.
