However, trend in private ITIs is not different. They too have witnessed decrease in the number of students this year by over 10 per cent. Presently, there are 10 government-run and six private run ITIs across the State.
As far as government-run ITIs are concerned, a total of 3098 students had enrolled in 2015. The enrolment increased to 3,489 students in 2016. However, the enrolment decreased to 3,305 in 2017.
Similarly, enrolment in private ITIs which was 224 students in 2015, increased to 230 students in 2016 and decreased to 205 during the present academic year.
Speaking to The Goan Everyday, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Director Alexio da Costa said Electrician and Fitter are two trades that have demand not only in Goa but across India.
"There are nearly 13.5 lakh ITIs across the Country with nearly 28 lakh students. Among these, 18 lakh students are studying only in two trades - Electrician and Fitter", he stated.
However, number of students for trades like Plumber has reduced marginally.
"One reason the reduction in number could be attributed to is that the entry level qualification has been increased from Class VIII to Class X", he said adding, "But this demand seems to have shifted to Wiremen trade", he said.
Aiming at benefitting the students who opt for various trades in ITIs, the Directorate has also shifted to online registration for apprenticeship.
"As far as apprenticeship is concerned, ITI candidates can register themselves and also sign contracts for apprenticeship online, in addition to the recruitment", he said.
